Call Center Horror Stories : My Cousin's Experience

First off, this is not the horror story that you are thinking about.  HORROR here means the BAD EXPERIENCES one has while working in a call center. This is a re-blog of an old post in my old blog.  I sent this as a letter to  SunStar Bacolod.  I sent it as a letter to the editor and was published by SunStar Bacolod on November 29, 2007, Vol. XIII, No. 64, page 9.  I was still single when I wrote this piece. ____________________________________ Good day. I am one of the SunStar readers residing in Bacolod City.  I never pictured myself writing to a newspaper but necessity and urgency pushed me to do so. Last November 21, 2007, Wednesday, at around 3 in the morning, my cousin Gee, was held-up by two unidentified men in front of Jollibee La Salle while waiting for the company bus to pick her up for work.  To check the veracity of my story, you may inquire from the Villamonte Police Station where she (my cousin) made a blotter report that same morning....

Some Things Change; Some Things Don't

Image
While going over some old pictures, I noticed some very interesting ones. I realized that some things in my life have changed; some did not. The thing that did not change in my life is China. It's still one of my favorite countries. Don't get me wrong. I've never been there. In fact, I've never traveled outside the Philippines. It's just that my paternal grandfather always told me stories about how his ancestor is from China and that we have Chinese blood. He also told me about his grandmother who had bound feet (Lotus Feet). And so, I've always wanted to visit China and see everything for myself. Me as Miss China, March 23, 1985 The thing that did change is my “ambition”. I don't know if this is true for all Kindergarten (or Prep Schools), but where I came from, we have this yearly “When I grow up I want to be....” school program. When I was in Kinder, my line was “When I grow up I want to be a nurse”, which did not happen because me...

Thanksgiving Blog No. 1

Image
I promised myself last October 16, 2013 that every month I should blog about at least 10 things to be thankful for, and that I should not post similar entries. And so my “thanksgiving blog” starts today. Here's the proof of my “self-promise”: The first two things (or people) I am thankful for (and to) are my parents. I learned a lot from both of them. They are always there for me through thick and thin. And the most important thing I learned from them is God. They introduced me to God, to Jesus Christ, and to salvation. With Tatay (1982) With Nanay (March 15, 1981) And now that I am already a married adult, they still take care of me. Thank you Tatay and Nanay. :)

Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education Program

Once again, I am re-blogging a blog I made when I was still studying EDUC103.  Our professor asked us to give 3 arguments to promote Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education.  This blog was originally posted on July 26, 2013 at the UPOU internal blog.  __________________ Mother tongue-based multilingual education (MTB-MLE) refers to education or learning that begins in the mother tongue and transitions to additional languages, particularly Filipino (or Tagalog) and English (Capitol University, 2012). If I were to advocate for/promote the Mother tongue-based multilingual education program , I will use the following arguments: MTB-MLE improves learning outcomes. The learner can express himself/herself easily in his/her own language (L1), and is thus encouraged to participate in class discussions. The learner clearly understands what is being discussed and what is being expected of him/her. The use of L1 increases the learner's affective domain involvi...

Assessment

This blog was originally posted at the internal blog of UPOU, and I am making it "public" (just like my previous blog).  This was my view of assessment in school - and I had this view before I took EDS113 (Principles and Methods of Assessment).  And of course, I got a great score for this post. :) ____________ I believe that assessment should be part of the learning process and not just an activity at the end of a series of learning experiences. According to our Module 11 guide, assessment should be done continuously (or that is, it is ongoing) because its primary purpose is to improve learning. It is also concerned with how learning is going, and its main use is to identify areas for improvement. If it is only done at the end of a series of learning experiences, its primary purpose is defeated . When the learning experiences are already done, how can learning be improved? When assessment is made a part of the learning process, knowledge sharing and interactio...

My Concept of Curriculum

I posted this blog at the internal blog of UPOU when I was still taking the course EDUC103.  The original post is dated May 9, 2013  I kind of liked this post and I am sharing it to the "public" now. ______________________________________________ I have been teaching for almost five years now, and in the academe, the word “curriculum” gets thrown about quite loosely – curriculum this and curriculum that – and I, as a teacher, admittedly, have a limited concept of the word. I am a Business Administration graduate, and we did not have a subject on curriculum development or any subject related to teaching for that matter. At the beginning of each semester, teachers are given their subject loads. For old subjects (that is, subjects taught for years in the department), there are already ready-made syllabi and/or course outlines that the teachers follow. My previous understanding of curriculum is that it includes all the subjects that a student has to take/study in ord...
