NOTES ON GENESIS 1

Image
INTRODUCTION I am not a Bible scholar and I don ’t have a PhD in Biblical Studies.  I am just an ordinary person who studies the Bible.  I will be posting some notes and thoughts that I have as I study the Bible.  I am all for a healthy discourse, however, I will not be a party to bashing, destructive arguments, and the like. I am open to a positive learning experience.   NOTES ON GENESIS 1 1.   As I started reading the Bible, I noted in verse 1 that “God created the heavens and the earth”.  There was no mention of planets, galaxies, and the universe.  In fact, the words galaxy and universe are not in the Bible.  The word planet was mentioned only once in 2 Kings. 2.  The first creation of God was light.  There was already Light on earth BEFORE the sun and moon were created.  In other words, we cannot consider the sun and moon as the MAIN SOURCES of light because even before they were created, there was already LIGH...

WHO AM I?

I am fond of personality tests since I want to know myself more. As most Chinese philosophers would say, knowing yourself is true wisdom. I recently "uncovered" a personality test site in the web, www.16personalities.com, and other than telling me what I already know (that I am an INTJ), I also found out that the "strategy" of my personality is Confident Individualism. Of course, to know what I am talking about in here, you have to visit the website yourself. The personality test presented in the website is eerily accurate, and most things (if not all) are so true about myself. Here are some things about Confident Individualism that are true about myself. 1. They often embrace solitude to pursue their own interests rather than seeking out social activity. Going out to meet other people is an EFFORT. So if I spend time with you, you are important to me. 2. Confident Individualists tend to feel that social displays and bragging are time and energy wasted.  ...

MARRIED WITH NO KIDS

Image
I haven't blogged for years, and I am tempted to write a tasty title for this new blog I am writing after several years. Yes, I am married for almost 9 years now and my husband and I have no kids because I have endometriosis. I have cysts in my ovaries and I am also suffering from hematosalpinx. No, I am not 100% infertile. In fact, I still ovulate regularly. Fertilization is just challenging because the cysts are aggressive (though they are not cancerous). I have been reading “Barren among the Fruitful” by Amanda Hope Haley, and like Amanda and the rest of the women in the book, I was motivated to tell my story. Bearing no children while being married is still very challenging in this modern world. Despite advancements in science, technology, and even culture (yes, we now have what others call “modern culture”), women are still expected to bear children. Or to say it bluntly, women are still deemed as “baby-makers”. Married women with no children are still looked upo...

VICES NOT ALLOWED

Image
DEFINITIONS What is a vice?  If you check any dictionary, a vice is defined as any habit that is immoral, evil, degrading or depraved .  I've read from an article in the Internet that Aristotle defined vice as the habit of making wrong choices  (https://medievalchristianityd.wikispaces.com/Virtue+and+Vice).  More often than not, a vice is also an addiction (take note of the word “habit”).  Gotquestions.org gave two definitions for “addiction”.  The first definition is “ to cause to become physiologically or psychologically dependent on a habit-forming substance ” This applies to dependence on alcohol, drugs,  tobacco, etc.  The second definition is  “ to occupy (oneself) with or involve (oneself) in something habitually or compulsively. ”  This applies to obsession with activities like shopping, eating, sports, gaming, etc. (http://www.gotquestions.org/addiction-Christian.html). Christians are NOT supposed to have any vice or addicti...

CAT AND DOG THEOLOGY

Image
2015 New Year Picture with Tashi and Rabbit Daniel and I love cats.  We currently have five cats at home.  They are named Tashijimaro (or Tashi, the only male cat), Yani, Usagi (or Rabbit), Maru, and Panda.  Having cats at home reminds me of the Cat and Dog Theology of Christianity.  I've read a few literature on the subject but it is really different if you experience this first hand.  I will share with you some things I learned from our cats and relate them to our Christian lives. The first thing I learned from our cats is the nature of wanting "reckless adventure".  All of our cats want to venture outdoors where it is dangerous.  We allow our cats to go outside our house but only until within our gates.  The reason why we don't want them to go beyond our gates is the dangerous nature of the outside world.  I have read somewhere that stray cats or cats that usually stay outdoors have a maximum lifespan of two years (on the average...

The Lord is My Shepherd

Image
Image from https://philmoser.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/lord-is-my-shepherd_t_nv1.jpg Five years ago, we used to read "Springs in the Valley" (by Mrs. Charles E. Cowman) as our devotion guide.  I can still remember one of the devotions on Psalm 23: 1: "The Lord is my shepherd". The author explained the verse this way: "The Shepherd is responsible for the sheep; not the sheep for the Shepherd. The worst of it is, that we sometimes think we are both the Shepherd and the sheep, and that we have both to guide and follow." After reading those sentences, I was reminded by a few lines most of us might have heard at church or from some Christians. "I am the biggest tither in church. Without me, there will be no one to support our church." "I am the head of the Children's ministry. Without me, the children's ministry will be crippled." (I didn't know that the Children's ministry has two legs! hehe...) "I am ...

And today, because I have a few minutes to spare, I decided to write down what I can remember about a sermon that I heard in church (Horizon Christian Fellowship) years ago. The sermon was on the book of Jude. Verses 3 and 4 of the said book reminded me of something. Here they are: "3: Beloved, while I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I was constrained to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. 4: For there are certain men who crept in secretly, even those who were long ago written ab...
