VICES NOT ALLOWED

Image
DEFINITIONS What is a vice?  If you check any dictionary, a vice is defined as any habit that is immoral, evil, degrading or depraved .  I've read from an article in the Internet that Aristotle defined vice as the habit of making wrong choices  (https://medievalchristianityd.wikispaces.com/Virtue+and+Vice).  More often than not, a vice is also an addiction (take note of the word “habit”).  Gotquestions.org gave two definitions for “addiction”.  The first definition is “ to cause to become physiologically or psychologically dependent on a habit-forming substance ” This applies to dependence on alcohol, drugs,  tobacco, etc.  The second definition is  “ to occupy (oneself) with or involve (oneself) in something habitually or compulsively. ”  This applies to obsession with activities like shopping, eating, sports, gaming, etc. (http://www.gotquestions.org/addiction-Christian.html). Christians are NOT supposed to have any vice or addicti...

CAT AND DOG THEOLOGY

Image
2015 New Year Picture with Tashi and Rabbit Daniel and I love cats.  We currently have five cats at home.  They are named Tashijimaro (or Tashi, the only male cat), Yani, Usagi (or Rabbit), Maru, and Panda.  Having cats at home reminds me of the Cat and Dog Theology of Christianity.  I've read a few literature on the subject but it is really different if you experience this first hand.  I will share with you some things I learned from our cats and relate them to our Christian lives. The first thing I learned from our cats is the nature of wanting "reckless adventure".  All of our cats want to venture outdoors where it is dangerous.  We allow our cats to go outside our house but only until within our gates.  The reason why we don't want them to go beyond our gates is the dangerous nature of the outside world.  I have read somewhere that stray cats or cats that usually stay outdoors have a maximum lifespan of two years (on the average...

The Lord is My Shepherd

Image
Image from https://philmoser.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/lord-is-my-shepherd_t_nv1.jpg Five years ago, we used to read "Springs in the Valley" (by Mrs. Charles E. Cowman) as our devotion guide.  I can still remember one of the devotions on Psalm 23: 1: "The Lord is my shepherd". The author explained the verse this way: "The Shepherd is responsible for the sheep; not the sheep for the Shepherd. The worst of it is, that we sometimes think we are both the Shepherd and the sheep, and that we have both to guide and follow." After reading those sentences, I was reminded by a few lines most of us might have heard at church or from some Christians. "I am the biggest tither in church. Without me, there will be no one to support our church." "I am the head of the Children's ministry. Without me, the children's ministry will be crippled." (I didn't know that the Children's ministry has two legs! hehe...) "I am ...

CHURCH QUALIFICATIONS

And today, because I have a few minutes to spare, I decided to write down what I can remember about a sermon that I heard in church (Horizon Christian Fellowship) years ago. The sermon was on the book of Jude. Verses 3 and 4 of the said book reminded me of something. Here they are: "3: Beloved, while I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I was constrained to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. 4: For there are certain men who crept in secretly, even those who were long ago written ab...

CLEAVING AND COMMITMENT

Image
Image from http://firsttoknow.s3.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/in-law-interference-558X279.jpg I haven't posted anything in my blog for a year. I have been busy. Truth is, I am still busy until now, and so, I chose to post something that I have posted 6 years ago in an old blog of mine. I am rather surprised that I was so direct when I wrote this. Maybe I was horrifyingly irritated when I was writing this piece. Regardless of the rather "harsh" words, I believe that what I wrote years ago is still true until today - most especially in a collectivist society wherein the business of one is the business of all. Here is what I wrote: I got the excerpts below from the devotional Moments Together for Couples, a devotional from Crosswalk.com. The writers of the devotional are Dennis and Barbara Rainey. This particular devotional is dated May 21. "Genesis 2:24 For this cause a man shall leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave to his w...

No Gray Areas

Image
This is a topic that I have already written on in an old blog that I had years ago. Despite the passing of time, I believe that the Biblical principles I've written before are still applicable until now. I am not a Bible Scholar. I am not a perfect Christian either (there's no such person). In fact, one of my favorite verses is I Timothy 1:15 which says that "...Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost." I had an enlightening realization on the so-called “ gray areas in Christianity ”. There are no such things. I am reminded of a sermon on III John that I heard in church years ago. Verse 11 stuck to my mind. It says, “Whoever does good is from God; whoever does evil has not seen God." Notice that the comparison is only between two things: white and black - good and evil. There is no mention of a gray area. A gray area is understood as a situation which is sort of correct and sort of wrong and a person's...

TEN RULES TO FOLLOW WHEN RIDING A PUBLIC JEEPNEY

This is a VERY OLD blog. I first wrote this when Friendster was still the “in” thing, and I was still going to school. I re-blogged this on November 11, 2008 in my second blog. And now that I've decided to be a “permanent resident” in blogspot.com, I am re-blogging this again (Sorry for the redundancy : “re-blogging” and “again” but you know what I mean). Despite the “old age” of this blog, I believe that the rules I wrote down still apply even until now – except maybe NUMBER 7 - though they are generally applicable in Bacolod City only. Other cities, towns, and provinces have their own “jeepney culture”. READ ON. Almost all of us ride public jeepneys to work or school everyday, so I think this matter is essential. There are actually many rules to follow but I summarized them into ten rules to simplify things. Also, these rules are based on my own personal experience. 1. Say “Please” and “Thank You”. It is common to ask someone else to pass our fa...
