Childhood American TV Series Part 1

Yesterday, I was writing about some of the rules my parents gave me when I was still young.  I also mentioned that I was allowed to watch Dayuhan on TV (1987 Filipino TV series).  Some people might think that my childhood TV dates were full of Filipino TV shows.  The contrary is true actually.  When I was young, my parents, especially my father, encouraged us to watch English/American TV shows.  Of course, we were allowed to watch Filipino TV shows but that's for another blog.

The TV show that left an imprint on my mind is MACGYVER.  I was in grade school when this TV series was being shown (1985-1992).  MacGyver (played by Richard Dean Anderson) is a secret agent who can solve anything and make anything with the use of his duct tape and Swiss army knife.  I can still remember some recurring themes wherein bad guys would trap or imprison MacGyver in a room and he would just escape by using stuff found inside that room.  I believe that MacGyver influenced me to buy a cheap army knife when I was in high school, not to mention by obsession with tapes (masking tape, packing tapes, clear tapes, etc) when I was in college. And yes, until now, we still have several rolls of tape in the house.  If you search the Internet, there are several websites dedicated to finding out out if the experiments done by MacGyver in the TV series are true or realistic.  More than half are true. Of course, the rest of the experiments are for "TV purposes" only. If you want to know more about MacGyver, you can go to www.macgyveronline.com

Another TV show that we used to watch at home was THE A-TEAM.  Yes, it was a TV series before it became that big movie we saw years ago (2010).  This TV series was shown when I still really young (1983-1987), so I can remember so little from it.  The most that I can remember are helicopters, and Mr. T.  Just like in the recent movie, the four main characters in the TV series were Col. John "Hannibal" Smith, B.A. Baracus, Murdock, and and Templeton "Faceman" Peck.  You can watch The A-Team's episodes online through www.nbc.com

Look at that smolder!
Another TV show that we followed at home stars The Hasselhoff.  Why is he called The Hasselhoff anyway?  It's not Baywatch.  Baywatch was shown on TV a little later.  I'm taking about KNIGHT RIDER.  This TV series was shown in the US between 1982 to 1986.  But I guess, it was shown a little later in the Philippines.  This TV series is about Michael Knight (Hasselhoff), an undercover Las Vegas police detective, and his talking high-tech car named KITT (Knight Industries Two Thousand).  This show was rather popular because of its sci-fi element (I mean, whoever heard of a talking car in the 80s?).  Those born in the 90s cannot possibly understand some references on "Hasselhoff and his talking car".  They are referring to this TV show.  To know more about Knight Rider, you can go to www.knightrideronline.com.

There were other TV series that we followed during the 80s but I can't recall all of them. I even remember watching a TV show entitled "Hunter" which, according to wikipedia, ran from 1984 to 1991.  This TV series must have been good because I can clearly remember my father watching it.  Sad to say, I can't remember a single episode or scene from this show.  I believe though that this TV show was good enough to have my father name his favorite dog "Hunter".

All the TV shows I mentioned above were being shown on TV while I was still in grade school, and I was watching them with my parents (PG, right?).  When I was in high school, I followed a different set of TV shows, which I will discuss in my next blog.
