Another School Year!

Image
I have been teaching in the School of Business and Information Technology, La Consolacion College, Bacolod City for a little more than three (3) years now.  Truth is, I had no idea that I was going to be a teacher/professor, but here I am now.  Even though our department is rather small compared to the other departments in LCC, I am still proud of it.  As a dedicated professor (ahem), I made some ads for our department, courtesy of our business, DJ Media ( https://www.facebook.com/DJMediaPH ) .  Photos are by Hernan Mervyn Veñegas of hm veñegas MediaArts ( https://www.facebook.com/hm.venegas ) .  Models are Victoria Grace Dejilla, Gladys Ruth Atas, Alyssa Santillan, and John Xander Maravilla.

"I Will Not Let You Go Unless You Bless Me"

One of my favorite verses in the Bible is Genesis 32:26, which says: "Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.” But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” Image from http://crossandcutlass.blogspot.com/2010/09/wrestling-with-god.html For some, this might be considered as the most selfish verse in the Bible.  This is an exchange between Jacob and God (or the Son of God, or an Angel of God) while they were wrestling at the time when Jacob feared for his life and the lives of his wives and children. It is as if Jacob was "coercing" God to bless him, OR ELSE.  But the truth is far from that. Given my present circumstances, I believe that I know exactly how Jacob felt at that time.  I have no job security (thus, no financial security).  I am plagued with health issues.  Yes, I have family and friends who comfort, encourage, and pray for me.  But it seems as if everything they tell me are words I have heard before, a...

Corporal Punishment: Do or Don't

Image
Image from http://digitaljournal.com/article/255930 I am married but we do not have any kids.  I know that the fact that we don't have any kids will be people's measuring stick as to whether or not I am knowledgeable enough to write about corporal punishment towards children.  But I was also a child once, and I believe that this makes me eligible enough to write about corporal punishment. MY PARENTS' EXAMPLE I cannot understand why people equate corporal punishment to physical abuse.  This is absolutely not true in our family.  As far as I can remember, my parents started spanking me when I was 6 or 7 years old and stopped when I was 10 years old.  They used a belt to spank me. If a belt was not readily available, my parents used their hands. In addition, there is an equivalent number of "hits" depending upon my infraction.  For small matters, like touching or playing with things I am not supposed to touch and eventually, breaking them, that...
